Is This Unsportsmanlike?

A computer doesn't rudely time out, even if it was a video game.

@kempo...sorry, don't agree, whether your sitting in a tournament hall or playing on-line, your opponent deserves some respect. The medium of interaction shouldn't change the way you conduct yourself. By the way I can understand the analogy of playing a video game if ur playing a computer but not when it's a person.

Yep, it's not excusable just because you aren't sitting opposite each other.

just imagine if you chat with your wife who is in somewhere far from where you are and suddenly she leaves the chatroom without even saying goodbye.

Petrosian was noted for such things, especially the kicking.  Korchnoi kicked back.  They were never friendly.

Thank you for the very interesting update on the Steinitz story. And I knew Korchnoi has been a jerk all the time but I had no idea Petrosian had such a reputation, I don't know why, but I'm surprised. Could you share any sources on that?

If someone abandons a lost game post a note on their profile warning others and then block them.

The way I read it, was that Korchnoi kicked Petrosian first, because Petrosian kept wiggling the table, causing the pieces to jiggle, when he was trying to concentrate.  When Korchnoi told him to quit, he just turned his hearing aid off. So Korchnai kicked him.

100% AGREE! You are playing with a person, not with a computer!

Put it in proper perspective, I say!

Btw, what's wrong with clicking the "Resign" button to concede defeat?

Avatar of wbilfc

@nangangarap: Pressing "resign" is exactly what they want!

Avatar of MisterBoneman

so...two months ago a good friend of mine died. Takes your breath away, momentarily, to be sure. But I took the time to resign everyone of my games. A nice apology, and no, I think I didn't have to mention why except in two cases. Two came back and offered me challenges for a rematch. To them, I explained why I resigned. The onenever returned any kind of reply, while the other came back around a month later and we started another game.

Then another friend died. But now a bit thiocker skinned, I hung on to the few I had restarted...although did poorly in the middle games.

Just when I was starting to get past that, a third friend died. I just put my shoulder down and walked right square into the games. Got a bit angry a few times, but, I have a habit of turning my anger into chess combinations...and accidently ate up a few folk.

I said that to get to this.

Those ARE people on the other end of the board on your screen. You don't have to respect them if you don't want to, but then, that's YOUR problem, not their's. As for folk that leave mid-game, sure. I've had a few. I suspect MOST have. But, and please don't get me wrong... but, get over it.

What valid reasons are there to just quit a game?

They are burdened with their home life somehow, and priorities.

They discover they are over their heads in the game and are too embarrassed to remark about it.

They discover that they are way over your level and are letting you off the hook because they are nice like that.

Their priority list does NOT include chess.

There are probably as many reasons as there are people playing chess right now. So?

If they let the clock run out, yes...you had to see their board a few times before it was over. Geez...someone give me a violin, please. I can's play it, but I'll pretend to play it whilst humming a sad tune, eh?

It is probably more disrespectful in condemning a person for reasons unknown than if you cursed them at your table, over the board.

@MrBoneman: Are you serious? 3 friends in two months! However, the reasons that you state for abandoning a game are exceptions, believe me, the vast majority are simply small minded people who can't accept a defeat gracefully.

Avatar of Yohan_Saboba

Resign or play on, never just abandon the game or wait for your time to run out.

Avatar of MisterBoneman

@wbilfc...one of the reasons ..I'm 61. My friends were (respectively,) 62, 64, and 36. Cancer took all three.

That was just the tip of the iceberg for August and September. and no, I'm not going to drone on about my misery.

But I have "drop-outs," too. I try to coax them back with Capablanca quotes, positive reinforcement, jokes...

I went to the eye doctor's without an appointment. The receptionist asked me why I was there. "I'm seeing spots," I say. She asked if I ever saw an eye doctor before.

"No,"  says I,  "just the spots,"

Now grandma went till she was 85 without ever using glasses.

She drank straight from the bottle.

(what do you mean, "THAT'S why they left" ...???)

To some people, Chess is just a game.

To others, it is the Game of Kings.

There's no really "right" answer, everyone has different opinions on this question.

The old ones are the best...!

Avatar of TeraHammer

Often, people just happen to turn up at 0:05 to make a sneaky last move.

I then return the favor and let my clock run down to 0:10 and blitz up the board.

Avatar of wbilfc

@Trapper4: Wouldn't be much of a debate if we all agreed.

Few things are as irritating as people abandoning lost games. Very ugly, shame on you.

The only thing I consider more irritating is this:

By the way, "mordann", thanks for not offering me a draw (after the obvious computer error) in a position where black is lost.

Maybe "mordann" thought that my first 18 moves were pure luck, and now, at move 19, I actually didn't see that my queen can be captured by a simple pawn?

Avatar of JJJ363

no one ever offers me a draw after a horrid misclick, it's the price you pay. It might be unsportsman , but if this happens against me then it's your lose/mistake. This is just my opinion though.

Avatar of FadyPrOnGs

I wouldnt take the queen if i were him. I would offer a draw or play another move.
