No. Right now, Carlsen will defeat him in a match. If Wesley wins Tata Steel or a major tournament ahead of Carlsen, Kramnik, Anand, Aronian and Caruana, then I would say he can beat Carlsen in a match and become world champion. But his goal of reaching 2800 is possible. I like the fact that he continues to play in open tournaments because it shows that he is not afraid to lose elo points.

What's wrong with playing in open tournaments?

FrancisCruz1

There is nothing wrong playing in open tournaments. Elite players usually avoid open tournaments because they play lower rated opponents and losing or even drawing against them means significant decrease in rating. Nowadays, a player should have a high rating if he/she wants to be invited in elite tournaments.

Jion_Wansu

So elite players are not that good as they think

FrancisCruz1

They will not reach that level if they are not that good but I guess it will not cause any harm if FIDE requires an elite player to play a certain number of games a year and join a couple of open tournaments a year.

Aronian attacking his banana Q somewhere in the philippines..yummy!

OMG, I didn't know this guy! At first sight I guessed the original post was something like this:

Is Wesley (American super GM)

so better than Carlsen?

Apotek

lucky Levon!here he is at the beach,on one of the most beautiful islands on the planet, boracay Philippines...I wish I was there now!Smile

FrancisCruz1

Nice! My officemates and I will go to Boracay in February. I hope I will have a chance to play a couple of blitz games against locals or tourists there.

Last year the discussions in these forums have concluded that not only So, but also Aronian, Caruana, Kramnik, Anand and a bunch of other players are better than Carlsen.

Magnus is a special talent like Morphy, Capablanca,Fischer,Alekhine.

Players like that are the musical equiviliant of Bach, Mozart,Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky,Haydan one of a kind.

Are you playing 'spot the odd one out'? I think I've spotted the untalented chess player in your list of players and the untalented musician in the list of musicians. Fischer and Mozart are not like the others, they don't belong in those lists because their efforts were entirely derivative and also naff.

But you're right about Carlsen, he's awesome.

I like him.  It will be nice for him to take over the US #1 spot from Nakamura.  So is, by all accounts, a nice and humble man.  Just the type of person that should be representing us to the world.

What type of a person is Nakamura, then? A barbarian? (http://www.chesspersonality.com/type/barbarian)

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but Naka did not always show the best of manners in the past.

I remember seeing a youtube video of him many years ago where he was playing bullet OTB and when Naka knocked over a piece he simply hit his clock and left the piece lying on the board, leaving it to his opponent to fix the mess he created.

And because Naka had hit the clock, his opponent lost time while he was fixing Nakas mess.

Seeing that,I immediately lost respect for Nakamura as a person. That's why I'd much prefer Wesley So to represent the US.

Really? In what way was Mozart's operatic music derivative? Maybe you would prefer to discuss the formal aspects of his symphonies?

As for Fischer, in the 70s he was ahead of his contemporaries by such a margin that he must have known something they didn't.

No.

Kummatmebro

Too early to tell

But when was the last time he played guys in the top 10 and not American players that are a good 300 points or more less than him?

The St. Louis uscl is going crazy cuz they won but lmao you bought 2 players in the worlds top 30 if you don't win Rex S is gonna be mad

Aighearach

Than, not then.

Calsen is not only the highest rated player by a category, he's also the Classical World Champion, the Rapid World Champion, and the Blitz World Champion. So So can't hope to be better in the opening, middle, or end game, or if he has more or less clock time. His best bet in my opinion is to smuggle a cell phone into Carlsen's pocket, and have somebody call it during the game. Instant DQ victory! Probably only good once in a match though, so sorry So.

It's hard to say how far So will go, but he is 20 years old and has a bit left before he is top 30. Carlsen was #21 before he turned 16, and had been #1 for a year when he turned 20. So could well be a future top ten player, but he will still need to improve a lot to get there.

by now, he is!

Rogue_King

Idk if he's better or not but he plays an incredible style, completely willing to sacrifice a pawn to his opponent to get a positional/tactical edge and bring it home to victory. I wish him well and am definitely a fan.

lolurspammed

Happy he's now representing us in Minnesota! :D
