I've become rubbish at live chess

I just played four games on an old live chess server i used to frequent with 30 minute time controls. I lost all four, two to lower rated players than me. I seem to have lost the ability to play live chess. This is a worry; what's going to happen when I start playing OTB chess in a club again?

I need my analysis board! I need a day to really think about a position! I need to leave my house in the morning thinking about a position, and play a good move when I return that night!

Has anyone else lost the ability to play live chess? Or am I just rubbish? How does one convert the deeper understanding gained from good CC to strong OTB play?

I've been really awful at live chess lately.  I'm not sure what it is - I usually play with 5 5 time controls, and I'm thinking that I just can't make sensible moves in that amount of time, at the moment.

I feel like I've become better at chess than I've ever been - examining the board, I see more things than I used to - I have some positional sense about where my pieces should be, rather than just seeing tactical opportunities a few moves away.

But in 5 5 controls lately, I've been missing pieces en prise, two move tactics, and walking into mate-in-ones.

I'm not sure if looking for positional factors is taking away my quick look-for-immediate-tactics time, or if I've just become too used to the time to calculate moves for correspondance chess, to the point that my intuition has suffered.

This is really a problem I had:

if you only play one kind of chess games (otb blitz, otb long, live chess, online chess), you will become bad at the others.

The solution is probably to try to play as many games as you can, online and otb, fast or long.

That's exactly how I feel. It's like I look at a live board and panic. My brain works more slowly now. No doubt about it, CC and chess.com have greatly improved my game, I just need to figure out how to translate that into live play.

That's weird. The opposite happens for me. I've gotten much better at OTB chess since I started an account here, but I continue to lose games that aren't live because I play like it was OTB, but my opponent waits and thinks about their moves.

i find my live chess is slowly improving under my constant improvements in turn-base chess. i think you really have to play both styles to get the best results. turn-base chess really helps me with positional strategies and planning because i can work out different variations and such. live chess helps me to quickly recognize positions and patterns (that i've learned from turn-base). i find the two styles compliment each other well.

I suffer from this problem. Playing a few rounds of blitz or 20min against a program that attempts to emulate human thinking pauses, (I'm using CM9000) before I come online is helpful, both to give my tactics a quick polish and get my pace into a better rhythm for playing under a timer.

If you play 10 games back to back against a skill level which gives you a reasonable challenge, then come online, you will find yourself happy with your performance on the server. I try to play a longer timer against the human opponents than I was using on the PC, and time seems very plentiful indeed!

EDIT - I should mention for those that give this strategy a try that it helps to remind yourself that you are playing a human when you do log-in, and that your rating is at stake!

For awhile I was playing great on Live Chess. In the past two weeks I am soooo bad I almost want to quit. I think of it as Garbage Chess now, like somehow it doesn't count. For some reason I continue to play and get whipped by people with much lower ratings than me ! In my online games I do okay.

I cannot figure out why I just can't win on live chess anymore..........I TOO HAVE BECOME RUBBISH AT LIVE CHESS !! Maybe we should have a game Ed ?

I just did it again. Got smashed in a live game. Slimcheffy, that sounds like a challenge, you've got yourself a deal.

Don't worry, I suck at live chess too.
