If you want to play better, play rated. On the other hand, if you want to avoid people who have some idea of how to play, unrated may be for you. Another advantage of only playing unrated is that it may allow you to believe that other people think you are a better player than you are (although in truth they will think are a beginner or rather weak if you haven't played any rated games).
