Sadly, I have no idea of the details.

My speculation would be that as a prisoner, he was probably trying to stay alive by doing favors for the guards.

Most likely that is the case Ronald. Batgirl, I thought that would be your reply since otherwise you would have included it, but to be sure I had to ask.

Yeah, I could speculate, but I prefer to give the facts as I know them and let others conjure up what they might.
Welcome back to the world of the speaking, Ronald! Drum on!

Thank you BG. I saw when I was muted, someone wanted to see what you look like?? ahahahahahaha That was weird I posted my apology in Lola's Funeral thread BTW.

He was likely promised a little extra gravy on his rice that evening. Doesn't take much, to bribe a man has nothing to begin with.

This chess set was made from rye bread by a prisoner at Auschwitz concentration camp for an SS guard.
The craftsman tried to make the brown King, the German side, to resemble Hitler.
Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933. In 1934 he became Fuehrer and Reich Chancellor. So, the Nazi Party was in charge from 1933 through 1945.
During that time 400+ decrees against Jews were issued.
On July 6, 1933 the All-German convention of chess players voted to bar Jews from membership.
The 1993 Berlin Memorial lists the 400+ decrees issued against Jew between 1933 and 1945. A posted decree tells us that on July 19, 1933 Jews were ordered officially expelled from the German Chess Union.
