what ever happened to that guy, the "Serching for Bobby Fischer" he was suppose to be the next big thing in chess.... but his peak rating is on 2480, he never even made it into the 2500, never a grandmaster.... he just kind of fell off the map

TetsuoShima

probably couldnt handle the pressure, but i bet he will regret it.

Pat_Zerr

From what I understand, he got to where chess wasn't fun anymore and quit.

He showed promise at an early age, but turns out he was a bit shit really.

His story proves that despite the world's best trainers and material not everyone can become a world champion chess player, but all of these unsuccessful stories are never talked about like the Polgar sisters are.

wasnt it more of a character test, where improving stops for a while and thouse who stick to learning will climb the hill and those who stop will of course lose anyway because they gave up???

I mean besides 2480 is still impressive of course, thats higher then some GMs i believe.

besides shouldnt you do chess for the fun, i mean if its only for becoming world champion, why play chess? its crazy why would you want to become world champion in something you totally dont respect???

He's a black belt and coowner of a jui-jitsu studio in NY.  He also won some big tournaments in China.  Doesn't sound like a loser to me.

TetsuoShima

uhospaghettio you know didnt someone ones say the measure of a man is not how he does in good times, but how he does in tough times??

nah if he were a winner he would have picked Karate, oh god or even Taekwondo as last resort.

So what?  Ken Rogoff made GM, finished 2nd in the US Championship and qualified for the FIDE Interzonal.  He left chess too, but became the chief economist to the IMF.

Waitzkin owns a studio and hawks his books to fanboys.

Awesome. Btw Stiglitz wrote some cool books, very interesting read if your into economic theories.

TetsuoShima

but still i wish i did martial arts as kid.

Personally I think we tend to overplay this "real men never, ever quit" mentality.  When he stopped enjoying chess, he decided to pursue other interests.  That sounds perfectly reasonable to me, and is certainly not an indication of a lack of character.

maybe, but you can also see it the philosophical way: " i dont love life despite the challenges but because of it"

you know i think it gives a weird impression to be Nietzsche and Fischer fan, but to me that is the way of the ubber human.

Not a loser, he found something else that interested him more than chess. He just moved on.

if that is the honest truth then yes

You are correct sir, please accept my apologies.  I obviously misinterpreted what you and Tetsuo were saying.  For anyone interested you might want to google Gracie jiu jitsu which is Josh's style.

Waitzken transformed himself into a 13-Time National and 2-time World Champion of Tai Chi Chuan Push Hands. His book "The Art of Learning" gives great insights to not only how to "learn" in general, but also reveals the story of his transformation to those who are interested. Highly recommended. He's an extraordinarily intelligent individual whose interests go well beyond chess.

Those who have been dissing him have no idea what they are talking about.

thats pretty cool im getting jealous... if tai chi chuan is really that cool stuff they do in the movie papillon

Quasimorphy

I think they should make a movie about Jeff Sarwer(who the Jonathon Poe character in Searching for Bobby Fischer was based on.) His story is much more interesting than Josh Waitzkin's.

TetsuoShima

if its the real tai chi, like controlling the entire body of another person with pressure points than im indeed not trolling jealous. But if its only the stuff the old people do in the park, than its really funny lol

Psalm25

What is Jeff Sarwer's story? I know what it is in the book, but do you know what happened to him after the book? Think he was the guy who drew against Josh in the championship if my memory's right

I thought he did a great job with the Chessmaster program. Does he still teach chess ? Regardless I wish him the best of luck in his decision to leave chess. I view it as a loss personally, I think he would have made a great teacher. I don't know about his book, and maybe his style doesn't appeal to everyone. Anyhow I liked his games in chessmaster.

I agree, that's some of the best chess material I've seen. He puts many of the instructors here at chess.com and elsewhere (ICC for one) to shame
