In the recent festival celebrating the Zurich chess club many strong players gave simuls, including Kasparov, and he spoke of being very out of practice, and how it was harder for him than for the other players. I guess this bodes somewhat poorly for his chances vs Karpov. On the other hand Karpov is playing poorly himself these days as he finished last in the champions rapids.
It's hard to make a prediction I'd put money down on.
I can't wait until 9/21-9/24!!! That's when Kasparov and Karpov will meet
and play 12 games against one another.
Who do you think will win and why? Did you know Karpov is still ranked #98 in the world? (a 2644 as of July 2009) Amazing with all those great new players out there. Also, Kasparov has devoted much of his time to the political arena.
That being said, I still think Kasparov will prevail somehow. What a thrill
to watch two of our heroes go at it again it will certainly be. This is what chess
is all about. I'll guess final score 4 wins Kasparov 3 wins Karpov and 5 draws, for
a final score of 6.5-5.5.
