I agree with better offence since an opponent has a hard time calculating where the knight is in x moves. knights open up for all sorts of tactics. a well posted knight causes a lot of trouble for the opponent, since he has to worry about it being used even if it doesn't.
in defence it is often the only piece protecting a mate on h2.
In the endgame it can however be harder to defend if you have pawn on both sides of the board using a knight.
