Knights with glass bead eyes

Sort:
MartinW58

I recently bought a lovely wooden vintage staunton style  chess set and the Knights have glass bead eyes. The king is 4 inches tall and all the pieces are weighted. It comes in a lovely oak box with dovetailed joints and felt interior - but no makers marks.

Question 1: Is it possible to identify who the maker is?

Question 2: One knight is missing his eyes - is it possible to get replacements?

Question 3: One bishop is missing it's felt base - where is the best place to get hold of replacement circular felt bases?

Question 4: One black castle has a split in the wood - what's the best substance for filling the crack to restore this piece? Or is there somewhere I can send the piece to have it restored?

Here's the box which might also help to identify the maker.

And here is the whole set.

Hi, I have that set. I bought it on ebay because I liked the Knights - see pic.

Sorry I cant help with any of your questions, would be interested if anyone does know.

My set is a bit tatty and the box is much older than the one you have there.

I would suggest something called Wood Putty for filling a crack in wood. Saying that, I have never used it on a chess piece. I'd imagine that would be quite a delicate process.

There are websites that deal in spare pieces so it might be possible to order replacements for the individual damaged pieces. I suppose it depends if the maker of your particular set does that but some definitely do.

That's a beautiful set! The horse's eyes are freaky.

1) can you post a photo of the cracked rook with emphasis on the crack? I'd be very reluctant to just fill it with wood putty

2) to my eye, the pieces look to be a higher quality than the box and I wonder if a previous owner made the box himself. Do you have reason to believe the box and the pieces were purchased together? The box is constructed with "box" or "finger" joints, technically not dovetail, although highly appropriate for, well, a box.

I think this is the complete set you are looking for, with the original box, its made in france by The House of Staunton, but it is not in their online store anymore, so I believe its quite old.

Hope it helps.

Only thing I want to know is:
1. How much did you buy it for, so I know how much to sell it for?

There is a Facebook group called chess collectors. Join it. They will identify the set and answer all questions.
