Newbe and just trying to learn via the lessons online. I can't see where to move the B on black square to release the pin and create an attack in one move. All white's pieces are on white squares. Please help, it is killing me not to be able to see this... Humbully, thanks in advance..dlg

How about posting a link to the lesson?

grubs4chess

Not sure how. It is under home page, on left column, click learn, then lessons, then Double Attack.  I will try to find the link. Sorry.

Sorry, this site is very confusing. I can't even find it now. I just went through all the lessons it advised me to do and the double attack lesson was the only one I could not complete. Now, I go to learn\lessons  and a whole new page comes up starting me all over on a different set. It is not a big deal, just curious what the move was. Maybe tech support will respond. Thanks for responding.. dlg

Finally found it. https://www.chess.com/lessons/view/7008

The hint makes no sense: Hint (-15%): Use the bishop to make a discovered attack on the white queen while creating a threat. It's called a Discovered Double Attack! The B is on a black square and all white's pieces are on white squares. Must be a typo or something.

spawkle529

Not a typo. As you can see in the puzzle when you move the darksquared bishop, the rook will attack the queen.

I assume the answer is 1...Bg1!. I'm just taking a wild guess.

Dude, so right on..... then, R takes Q and the lesson is over.  I would have never thought of that sacrifice at my novice level. Finally, I got through that class. Seems so simple now. It was the only white piece on a black square. Dah...Thanks so much. I also just won two games in a row by resign. That is definitely a first for me. I usually loose most every game. Guess all that time on the lessons pays off. Still, I got slammed on my first game....Too focused on what I am doing and not keeping up with the opponents plan. Classic novice. Thanks again for the response. Maybe we can play someday when I get better. Not sure how to make friends and play each other yet. That can come later. I got a long ways to go. Have a great evening. dlg

I am picking this up to occupy my boring retirement. It helps, but I will probably be dead before I get any good. ;o)  I am less than half of your rating, but really only been at it for a month or so. I got to quit playing live games late at night. They seemed to me me tense which makes it hard to get to sleep. Have a good one.....I do PokerStars.com as well. It is ok, but a lot of luck is involved. dlg

It's only barely an exageration that all tactics come down to double attack.

I never practice tactics from chess mentor.

Understood. Thanks for the comments all. Trick is making yours happen before theirs. I tried to find a Chess club in our area without success so far.  You would think a city of 800,000 would have a few Chess clubs. No funds available for a coach which would be nice, or attending a school for classes. I am generally a quick learner, as an MCSE for 20 years has to learn how to learn quickly in IT system issues. Kind of glad to be away from that gig, although it served me well for many years. Chat soon....dlg

http://trianglechess.com is a local club near you. It was included in a list of local area clubs here at : https://www.chess.com/local

Looks like it meets on Wednesdays.

Thanks. I did see that one, but it is near 40 minutes away, as I live ~30 miles SE of Raleigh/Garner NC. And our Raleigh traffic has become horrible in the last few years. I hate it any time I have to go there. I may just have to consider the haul now and then, or just play online. But thanks for the link...dlg

Yeak.  I would not be a fan of reading out chess tactics.  I prefer more means.  For tactics I just do an online tactics trainer from this site and others.  Occasionally I would watch a youtube video on a master doing tactics on various sites.  It helps a lot to get a feel for their thought process .  That is key to tactics and even positional moves.

grubs4chess

I watch a lot of Chess videos. Many time I have to go back and watch them again. King's Gambit accepted and declined are favorites. There are so many good ones out there, but memory retention after a few weeks is hard for me for some reason. Thanks for the response.. dlg

Occasionally you get some guys that come to the triangle mall, Friday - Saturday, not a club or anything but nice sets and clocks. I'd love to check out the triangle chess club, but I work every time they meet. I've halfway been teasing myself with the idea of setting something up Sunday's after 6.
