Yeah...I think it's really annoying, but you are going to win, it's just a disgraceful way of resigning...either play on or abort the game!
Letting the time run

I personally think that for people like me that play chess for fun, this kind of attitude takes the fun out of it and is discourteous and a bit childish as well...

I've suffered this for you, on my earlier account on uchess.com. This is a LONG time ago, but this is as far as I can remember: I was up a queen, 2 rooks, and a knight. The time control was 30 min, game, and 5 minuits into it, he started teasing me, and he wouldn't move. There I sat, ALMOST HALF AN HOUR, waiting for him to move and watching his annoying comments. That was the worst game of my life. I was so mad I was about to call him a *beep*.

Use my soultion.
It's not a real "solution", isn't it? There's nothing you can do anyway apart from start another game...
But as I said here before, this player does the same in every game he finds himself in a lost position, so I think some form of punishment is appropriate...

Can you read?
Yes, I can read thank you but it seems that you can't understand my point here!
How starting another game will stop people letting the time run out in a lost position?

So, there is nothing we can do about this kind of discourteous behaviour?
No, because there's no way to prove whether it's intentional or not. There are also odd cases where something can come up and that wouldn't be fair to penalize for something like that. You'll just have to find something else to do while you wait it out. It's unfortunate, but there are idiots all over the interwebs that make it worse for us normal people.
Thanks Anthony! I do accept that sometimes it would be difficult to prove if it's intentional or not, but in this case it would have been easy to check this player's games and see he does the same all the time and against many different players...
Maybe it's just me but I find this more annoying than playing against some cheater, because at least the game will flow, hehehe...

I wouldn't consider it as "discourteous behavior"
A long time ago, in a previous life, I fell asleep during one of my games. I recall the time controls being 30 0. When I woke up an hour later I found that, to my horror, the person had waited the whole 25 minutes for me to run out of time! I was feeling a little tired that day, so I just fell asleep in my chair. That may be "discourteous", but I say I was just plain tired.

As I said before, sometimes you can have a legitimate reason for doing that but if a player constantly does that, I find it discourteous.

A solution doesn't prevent the problem, it solves it! By playing another game it (very nearly almost!) DOES NOT MATTER that the other guy isn't playing anymore - you DON'T waste time (because you are playing another game) and you WIN the other game (albeit on time, but think of it as resigning). So problem solved.
What happens in the case when you're mistaken about your opponent's intentions and the come back and resume play. Then you're in the unenviable position of having to to juggle two live games. I'm sorry, this isn't a viable solution and besides, in the remainder of cases only addresses the symptom as opposed to actually solving the problem.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA someone timed out in an online game oh no.....
Seriously... take your free win and thank him :/
There is way too much crying/complaining on this website, it's a wonder erik hasn't gone insane listening to all of it.

Nobody said Erik (or his contingent of magical elves) hadn't gone insane...

Grobe, if they are long games than it wouldn't matter all that much. If they are short games than just wait them out. If you don't like the solution, sit there and wait.
That's fine under the current functionality, frankly those are our only options. I think, however, that there is an opportunity to implement something in the new version of live chess that actually mitigates the amount of time someone ends up having to babysit an abandoned game and possibly even disincentivizes others from abandoning games in this manner in the first place.

I think it's good for Erik and his staff to be able to see what is causing people frustration, although sometimes the tone does get out of hand, and issues are rehashed over and over.
The bottom line is that these types of threads highlight issues that deserve attention and hopefully prompt constructive discussion among the other members with respect to what kinds of solutions to the problem are palatable to the user base.
You don't like watching time run out? It's like watching their rating drain away...
