Live chess: 50 move rule

Hello everyone!

In this topic I am asking you about your experiences with the 50 move rule in live chess. First I am asking those players who don't know this rule to check it before posting.

I play live chess a lot (1+0 or 3+0) but situations with 50 moves without capturing or pawn moving appear very rarely. Most of the players are fair. They offer/accept draw if the position is completely tie with no chances to win for anyone.

However, there are some players prefer winning on time (and getting 5-10 rating points) to playing fair. And here comes the 50 move rule. I am not sure if you can claim draw after this rule. I clicked the draw button but it didn't work. Now I am not sure. Was I to early or is it impossible to claim draw in this case? Does anyone know the answer?

And I'm sorry for my bad English knowledge. I hope you understood what I wanted to say. Smile

Here's an article (from Help & Support) on How To Claim A Draw.  Hope it helps.

@baddogno Thanks for the link. If I understood it correctly, I can not claim draw for 50 move rule in live chess

So next time I will not waste my time for no reason. Smile

Hmmm...Not my interpretation of the rule.  No reason 50 moves shouldn't apply to live chess as well.  It's just that in "online" chess, there's a popup when draw becomes available and in "live" you use the same draw button as used to offer a draw.  I'm often wrong...

Maybe you're right...We will see next time when it happens...

Talking about fairplay and 50 move rule, you can laugh at me losing in a 10 minutes game on a theoretically draw position.

You can also notice that no pawn was moved between move 92 and move 147!!!!Laughing

And believe me, when time is going very low, you don't bother counting to 50 before clicking on a draw request!

I opened this topic because the same problem happened to me 2 (or 3) times in last month. I am not laughing because I know your situation very well. One of the games was this: (I played white)

It was a bullet game, so both of us played some stupid moves and made some big mistakes. But that's not the point of my post.

My last 53 moves were just Rg1 and Rf1. It was a theoretical draw. And there was more than 50 moves with no exchanging or pawn moving. If I play just those 2 moves black could never exchange any pieces.

My point is that there will always be some unfair players in the Internet. We can do anything. Just ignore them after the game.

You were told 3 weeks ago, you need to press the "offer draw" button.

PtiScarabee

Thanks Lagomorph but that wasn't the question.

We are just complaining about the fact that some players don't know the meaning of Faiplay.

So, please, let us vent!

And I'm glad for you if you are able, when under 1 minute to count 50 moves, click on the "offer draw" without Time forfeiting but it's quite difficult for me!

So, I've looked at the FIDE rules and indeed, you need to claim the draw for the 50 move rule. But, there is another FIDE rule stating that ''9.6b.The game is drawn if the last 75 moves have been completed by each player without the movement of any pawn and without any capture" and this, without any need for claiming the draw.

So, we could start a new topic with this question:

"On chess.com, does the 75 move rule apply?"Wink

And for this one, you haven't replied 3 weeks ago!Cool
