am i the only one who has noticed that chess.com live chess is having a deleterious effect on my board skills? instead of searching for the superior move, i find myself working the clock and often unneccesarily complicating positions with no clear idea whether i'm actually developing a superior position or just trying to force my opponent to run his/her clock down. (and for those two of you who will suggest online chess, pls reread the topic title)

Yep, I agree. I preach & preach against too much blitz (for improving players) & recently I played a bunch of blitz games & I suck royally at blitz. In real otb games too. My real otb rating is like hundreds of points different. I don't even like it, it's rediculous. But in my defense, I mainly get the urge to play it when I'm drinking booze, I never want to play it when not drinking precisely because I don't like it. Go figure.

I would think that at that point you've stopped playing chess and started playing...well whatever time control you're playing. In theory it should be possible to separate that wanton "just flag the other guy" mentality from your slow chess. However, I do know from experience that too much speed chess will kill your interest in real chess, which is definitely a serious problem if your goal is to become a stronger OTB player. If online speed chess is fun for you and you don't really care about getting better, then I don't see the problem.

Wow. I was just noticing this phenomenon. I have been blitzing like crazy for the past month (something which I never used to do at all) and my slow board games seemed to suffer for it. It's like I am mentally lazy or something.

This is why I never really play anything online faster than 30/5. The longer the game, within reason, the better for me.

I started learning the game while playing a lot of blitz at the same time and it made the initial curve far, far steeper for me than it needed to be.

It is fun to switch it up. 1, 3, 5, rarely 10 & online. I used to only play 30. Those seem so tedious now.
