Live Chess Options 5 minutes vs 30 minutes

I would like to hear some discussion about live chess from those who have actually played on this website.  Here are my thoughts.  They have preset options for 5 minutes and under.  They also have a blank where you are able to set your own time.  I usually set the time for 30 minutes because I think even though that is a fast game it is enough slower than 5 minutes that it is more like chess.  I do not think when you are playing 5 minute games that you could actually consider that a game.  Here are my observations I have played both the 5 minute games and the 30 minute games.  The 5 minute games were total confusion.  The 30 minute games were like chess.  Also there were many times when I started a 30 minute game and I am not certain but some of those games were aborted by my opponent because I think they thought they were involved in a 5 minute game and were not interested in a 30 minute game.  Also I just finished a 5 minute game that my opponent had a clear advantage and lost the game on time.  My opponent made a comment that clearly indicated being upset because he lost when he could have won had there been more time.  Another thing I learned even though you must think about your moves in 5 minute games it is almost as important to sometimes just keep moving and you will win because your opponent is taking to much time to move.  The 5 minute games include some blunders usually on both sides because no amount of time to carefully consider your moves.

Personally, I don't like 5 min crazy games.  I like it more like chess at the 30 min level.  I will likely continue playing a lot of move-based chess because I normally don't have 30 min totally uninterupted time.  Move-based chess amoung many other reasons is why I like this site.

Wait a minute , you can't compare 5 min chess to longer time conrols because 5 min is considered BLITZ chess . They have separate tournaments for Blitz games . And if you think Blitz is fast you should try 3 0 and 1 0 games , that's fast . When I played my first Blitz game I struggled badly but after about 50 games you get much more efficient and lose less on time . A little Blitz is good because it forces you to think quickly but too much can be bad for your long game.

Blitz has its advantages and its disadvantages.  Blitz helps me go through my opening preperation and check how solid it is, as I'm exposed to many different openings.  If I falter in the opening, I will always review the game afterwards and examine mainline/used variation.

As for losing on time, that's a part of the game!  Often times GM's will blitz (or near-blitz atleast) out 10-20 moves in order for them to reach the 40 move mark and get more time.  It's just that less people lose on time in longer games than in blitz games.

Good point about opening preparation

Since you can set your own time controls, the pre-sets seem rather redundant and unnecesary to me. Three minute or five minute time controls aren't all that bad, they just take getting used to. Some people, of course, never get used to them and/or don't like them. But the beauty is that they don't have to play at those time controls unless they just want to. Occasionally someone gets into a game at controls they weren't expecting. Shug. Occasionally people touch hot stovetop burners. They should be more careful and life is for learning. Losing on time is still losing, but if you lose in an advantageous position, you can at least be philosophic about the loss. One or two minute games are too fast for me, but many people like them. More power to them.

Before you discard blitz altogether, try thinking of it in these terms -

Blitz isn't about finding "truth" on the board. It's about the playing, pure and simple. The games have little intrinsic value and might be considered "throw-away games."  At the same time, they invovle little personal investment. A few minutes of time, and if you lose, so what? There's always another game waiting to be played. But such little personal investment also gives you a certain freedom. You can dare to be bold, clever, cunning, silly, defensive, intimidating ....  however you feel at the moment, and the cost is minimal. The fun is in the playing.
