What's the difference? Which one is dominant? Kiss

LMs have maintained a rating of 2200 for a high number of consecutive games. 350? It's basically a recognition for longevity and activity.

Isn't there an 'LM Title' on chess.com? (like if I have NM rn, then do we switch to LM, or just stick with NM? :?;);(

Avatar of mnag

Yes, Life Masters must maintain a NM rating for 300 games.

Limaster?? Hahahahaha

I thought they changed it recently and now you get life master differently. Some people will mention "original life master" (the 300 games one) instead of just life master.

There are two types of Life Masters that US Chess recognizes.

LM = "Life Master".  This is earned by achieving five master norms in US Chess competition.

Norms in the US Chess rating system are not easy to come by.  You have to score more than 1 point above the expected score for a player at that rating level against the field you played, in a tournament of at least four rounds.

As a basic example, the expected score in a five-round event for a 2200 player who plays five other players each rated exactly 2200 is 2.5.  So, to get a master norm, you'd have to score at least 4 points against the same field.  (Note the bolded text above - that's a strict inequality, so 3.5 points gets you nothing in this example.)

OLM = "Original Life Master".  This is earned by playing 300 rated games in US Chess competition while holding a rating of at least 2200.  This was previously the only way to become a Life Master, before title norms were introduced.

Either title carries a 2200 floor.  Both are referred to as "Life Masters".

Hope this helps.

Why did you bump this thread, dude?

This forum should show a warning to the user when he is posting in a thread that has been inactive for more than a month...

Warning??? LOLOLOLOL

Avatar of Another-Life

Not a mod warning, just a confirmation message saying "The thread you are responding to has been inactive for 3 months and 4 days and may no longer be relevant, are you sure you want to post your comment?"
