It wasn't brilliant, at least in my opinion (even if the computer dishes the move out as "Brilliant"). White loses the knight and the a6 bishop for a pawn and a rook, which is a fairly even trade.
It works only here because White is already two knights and a pawn ahead in material with no compromise to the king safety.

After 12. Nxg6 hxg6 (or 12...fxg6) white still wins material with the in between move 13. Bb5+. The h8 rook can now be captured without the bishop being captured on a6.
