Looking at the forest and the trees in a chess game

I don't know how to say this. But when I look over a chess game where every move I make may have dire consequences, I see a whole forest coming toward me. And then I look at the individual trees, and follow one or two of them, but then it seems no matter what I do, there is something ready to trap one of them.

I'm working with the tactics trainer and reading two books on tactics. And I play different characters on Chessmaster 9000, but as I said on another thread, when I am stuck in Chessmaster, I click on the HINT button.

But when you are playing another person online, there is NO hint button.

It's hard for me to think 2 or 3 moves ahead and plan.

Maybe if I were to play some complete chess fool I could plan. But there are no chess fools here. And strange to say, that 's why I enjoy this site, because there are really fine chess players and thinkers here.

Books don't seem to help right now. It's all in my head - trying to find a good path in the forest.

Maybe this means I may be growing -  even though it does not feel like it.

Anyone ever feel a bit like this?

yes... i felt about the same when i started, walking in unfamilier territory without any idea of what chess players call "a plan", as time progresses and you study chess the feeling dissapears and your understanding of chess grows...
