What do you have and how do you like it.?

That depends are you looking for board and pieces or just pieces (also chess clock)

The other question is this set just for home use, tournament or both?

Since not all sizes and styles are allowed for tournament play.

Wal-Mart has sets for less than 60 bucks. Hell you can even get a fancy 3 in 1 backgammon, chess and checkers set for that much money.

one tier above Wal mart ?

Here is very good wood standard pieces which is unfished? so you can paint or stian each side

Which would fit good with a 2" vinyl or mouse pad boad

Go to Amazon and search for Tournament No 6 chess set. It comes with a 21 by 21 folding chess board made from real wood and chess pieces from Wegiel. Chess pieces are just ok. But the board is of very very good quality. I bought mine for $50 something. I am very happy with it. Squares are 2.25. All wood.

Oh, don't confuse the chess set I suggested with other Wegiel sets from Poland. The ones with stylized pieces and boards aren't that good because each square is separated by a trench cut out or burn out and the entire board isn't entirely smooth as a result.

The one I described has perfectly smooth board which can have a small step at the folding line. Pieces are also more like standard Staunton. It also comes as Tournament No 5 but I think it's just unnecessarily smaller if you can get No 6 and get full tournament size.
