losing by time out?

I am playing 10 min games and have ‘lost’ several times due to time out, even though I am way ahead, like 10 points ahead. What’s up? How is winner decided?

You have to make all your moves before your ten minutes runs out or you lose.

Thanks for the reply. But I can’t play any faster than my opponent. When the time is up, shouldn’t the player with the most points win?

I am master, more like a disaster. However I rarely lose on time what my self taught(which is why I’m not better lol( philosophy is, goes like. Don’t let them do any thinking on your clock. And try to do all your thinking on their time.

No. It's not basketball. You don't win a game on points. What you are calling points is just a reference to the value of the pieces. The game has never been scored that way. You need to manage your time as well as your pieces.

I like this. I bet if folks are not already saying this to themselves, they will now.

Sorry, I know it's probably against the rules to compliment another player on this site (I just realized how sad that is I say that here). Proof?

Proof is… wait for it…

The thing is you both have a separate 10 minutes so to say, meaning that you have your own 10 minutes and the opponent has their own 10 minutes. So it is not like you both have just 10 minutes and that is it.

As nklristic pointed out, each player has their own clock. Only one clock runs at a time. Your clock only records YOUR thinking time, and your opponent's clock only records HIS thinking time.

So it isn't a question of THE time running out. There is no THE time. The question is whether YOUR time ran out (and you lose), or whether THE OPPONENT'S time ran out (and he loses).

The goal of the game is checkmate. The clocks are there to ensure the game ends in a certain amount of time and gives the same amount of time to both players. You can't win by using all your time to get a better position but not leaving enough time to checkmate.

If you use less time, it's very possible you won't have such a big lead either, so it's always a balancing act.

So now I think I understand why this has happened to me a few times.

Try playing a 15 min game instead of 10 min game maybe?  Or even 30 mins or 45 mins game.  I can't play a bullet game and I also think, personally, I need more time than the blitz game gives so I don't play those games.

try games with increment, like 5|5 or 15|10 or 10|5 (i think thats a time control). then, you can play without fear of a time out because of the increment.
