Well first of all, just because your black doesn't mean you have to be on defence, especially at a lower level, but the most important thing to playing good defence is simply recognizing your opponent's threats. An important thing to remember though, is that the best defence is an active defence. Instead of just defending or moving away your pieces, look for counter-play. Obviously sometimes it's best to just move away or defend a piece, but an active defense is overall much stronger and will give your opponent a harder time than a passive defence
Love attacking, hate defending.

Yep. Always look out for what your opponent's threat is, what your opponent is going to move, what you would do if the sides were swapped. Figure out why your opponent made each move he did. And don't make a move without first trying to anticipate what your opponent will respond to your move with and making sure that you can deal with any threats there.
And similar to what Mean-Mr-Mustard said, when defending, don't just make the first move you can see that defends adequately. Look for all options and decide which is best. The best defensive moves often deal with opponents threats whilst creating some of your own.
