Making money out of chess?

This might have been posted before but anyway...

Is there anyway you can make money out of chess? Except becoming super strong, like GM level and playing in strong tournaments, earning good money. I am not very positive about me becoming this strong since I started taking chess seriously 1 year ago, at the age of 15 (pretty late?). It's not impossible, but I'm trying to be realistic. Chess is one of my passions and it would be awesome to make a living out of it. I know that teaching is an option if you become a fairly strong player (NM/FM). What other options can you think of?

Work at a factory that makes chess sets.

This doesn't have much to do with chess. I could work at a chairs and tables factory. It would be the same.

Become a tournament director/arbiter.

You'll probably need a 2nd job, though.

Any other ideas?

Yes get a regular job and play chess for fun because unless you are a GM it is very hard to make very much money from chess

My mind goes back to the film "Searching for Bobby Fischer" when Bruce Pandolfini said that people play tactics in the park for drug money.  I have still yet to figure out where these places exist in my area ...

You can have a chess related business like running a website or a local chess club.  You have to get good to coach, but not super good.  You can probably do okay as an expert.  You can play for small amounts of money when you are not that good, both OTB and online, but I don't trust it enough to try online so I can't tell you about that.  I know in poker there are people who stake players.  I would imagine you can find people who would do that in chess too although it probably would not be as profitable.  Bascially you find a decent player and help with their travel and tournament expenses in exchange for some of their winnings.  You can also be a park huslter but you have to be relatively good for that.  Most of this is probably not enough for a career unless you get to master and then coach.

If you don't have morals, there are countries that give away titles for cash pretty much.  Once you have the credentials you can give lessons and just rehash out study material you have.

How can a country give out titles?? The only meaningful titles are gm and im and u only getting them at international events as far as i know.

How do you make money with a Chess Club?

PhoenixTTD

Chess clubs have dues and they run tournaments for cash all the time paying out about half the entry fees as prizes.

MDJMASTER

I've made only about $700 so far, though, from prize money from the local chess club. And that's over 4 years...  -_- Not a very promising future if you want to go pro.

About the titles, different countries have national master titles with lower standards than FIDE.  Some are much lower.  Not everyone will respect them but you can find students if you have one.

How do u learn to Run One?

PhoenixTTD

I have never run a club but the one I went to seemed pretty simple.  I would imagine you have to get approved with FIDE and your national chess association to run their tournaments.  Contact them to find their training/testing process.   Once approved, rent or buy some space, get lots of cheap chess sets and clocks, stock up on other things like scoresheets, pencils, a bookcase or two of chess books, and a fridge so you sell drinks.  Then get players and have tournaments.  You can also invest in GM appearances (pay them) to attract players.

Phoenix Thanks a Lot.

Write books and articles; commentate; run internet sites; hussle; promote tournaments; doubt there is a living in it though.

I suspect there's money to be made in chess software and chess-related services, because there are many serious chess players who are willing to pay money regularly, and there is basically very little quality software and services out there. There is no innovation happening among the big guys -- not at chess.com, not at chessbase, and not at ICC -- and the few small outfits and efforts that are trying new things don't have the resources to go all in, or they get part of it correct but fail on some crucial aspect such as usability or marketing, or they don't listen to their customers and what they really want, or they release and then appear to just stagnate, as if they decided it was a failed experiment that isn't worth putting any more serious effort into (yes, I'm looking at all you iOS and Android apps/services that I've tried).
