I just started playing chess again after over 40 years. Played a lot in my youth, in high school and college. Played in tournaments in Colorado, New Jersey and Arizona and did ok but not top level. My best friend and practice partner was a much stronger player and eventually achieved master status. I also played in Wyoming state tournaments. Not sure what my rating should be now but back in the day was around 1600. Finding that my opening play is suspect. I need to get a copy of MCO which I used extensively in my youth. Any advice would be appreciated.
I would suggest to pick an opening for white, along with responses to the popular e4/d4 openings of white, as black. Just play those for a good amount of time. Moves will be repeated more often, and will help you to recognize them quicker, along with understanding how to reply.
