Might Consider Qutting (or atleast taking a lengthy break)

I suck so bad at this board game, even though I've devoted hours to it. No matter what I seem to do to try and improve, there is ALWAYS something that will kill me. Try to learn openings and my opponent be pulling some wild stuff out of no where and I forget everything about how to punish. Keep making 1 move blunders at 1000 level (really irritating) and the game just isn't as fun as I remember it. Anyone else have the same frustrations? Here is an example of a historic choke:

While it is true that the game can be humbling, you are rated far above average here.

You need to recognize situations like this where you are ahead in material but have big weaknesses on the dark squares and are lagging badly in development.

If you enjoy chess, it shouldn’t matter if you lose some games, shouldn’t it?

You say that you try to learn openings but that you cannot remember how to punish your opponent when he tries something wild.

This is one of your problems. Learning openings does not mean that you have memorized traps and counters. Rather, learning openings means that you understand general principles that apply to all openings. If you really understood the general ideas behind an opening, you would not have to rely on memory. You would be able to figure out how to play in a new position and how to punish your opponent.

The usual problem. No one knows or understands how to play openings. All they do is memorize the moves without any understanding of why those moves are made. You want to imorove? Slow down, think and play slower time controls. No one improved by playing fast.
