Might Consider Qutting (or atleast taking a lengthy break)
You say that you try to learn openings but that you cannot remember how to punish your opponent when he tries something wild.
This is one of your problems. Learning openings does not mean that you have memorized traps and counters. Rather, learning openings means that you understand general principles that apply to all openings. If you really understood the general ideas behind an opening, you would not have to rely on memory. You would be able to figure out how to play in a new position and how to punish your opponent.
I suck so bad at this board game, even though I've devoted hours to it. No matter what I seem to do to try and improve, there is ALWAYS something that will kill me. Try to learn openings and my opponent be pulling some wild stuff out of no where and I forget everything about how to punish. Keep making 1 move blunders at 1000 level (really irritating) and the game just isn't as fun as I remember it. Anyone else have the same frustrations? Here is an example of a historic choke:
