and just for fun i'm including a different game between morphy and thompson:
morphy vs james thompson
Thanks goes out to ChessProdigy21 for sending me a link to these games. Here they are for everyone to enjoy:
Maybe it's the opposition (?) but James Thompson doesn't seem particularly strong even by club standards.
The match with Thompson took place (1859) after Morphy returned from Europe after having defeated Andersson and everyone else easily. He was at the height of his considerable powers. According to Sergeant, James Thompson was born in London in 1808, which makes him 29 years older than Morphy, so when they first met at the American Chess Congress (1857) Morphy was twenty and Thompson forty-nine. Again, according to Sergeant, Thompson was a restaurant owner from New York, hence I guess we could consider him a strong amateur of the time. Morphy disposed of him 3-0 in the first round of the Congress where they played on even terms. Simply put, Morphy crushed him. Anyone who has studied Morphy's games comes away with the feeling that he simply understood the game better than anyone he played. His move choice was simply more accurate than anyone alive at the time. At the same time, the observer cannot fathom the man himself. He was physically small and obsessed with being a gentleman amateur, but his skill at the game belied all that. Outside of chess, his life was a failure. Like Fischer, the legacy of his games is all we have.
Getting back to Thompson, i can't come up with any info other than that given my Sergeant. The chess culture is dying for a more up to date collection of Morphy games. the Sergeant book is good, but i'm sure more up to date info is available for some chess author.
recently came across the following text about paul morphy:
"How good a chessplayer was Paul Morphy? Let’s look at a match he played against James Thompson, a man thought to be one of the top dozen American players. Giving him the outrageous odds of a Knight, Morphy beat him 5-2! After looking over Morphy’s games, Fischer said that, given time to study modern theory and ideas, Morphy would beat any modern player (except Fischer, of course!)."
does anyone happen to know where i can find these games against thompson? i'd love to check these out.
