Morphy vs. Petrosian!

No, this is not one of those what if? posts, like Fischer vs. Karpov.

I was pondering the joys of attack combinations (in both offensive and defensive positions) vs. the satisfaction of great positional play. Now that I'm actively playing humans again (after a lull of more than 30 years!), I find it more pleasing to play the former type of game over the latter. Perhaps that's because I'm presently a relatively low-rated player who's not so good at positional play.

Anyone have any thoughts/preferences?

As I only play for fun, I also prefer the wacky attacking games, especially the ones where both players lose the plot as to whats actually happening in the game and the winner is the one who pulls it together first. I find the much more fun to play than a positional grind. Although that said my competitive streak stops me being too adventurous :(.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to abandon the "normal flow" of the game just to get in a wild, temporary attack for the sake of attack. If it leads to a permanent advantage, or bails you out of a bad position - then it's all the more enjoyable, no?

Good point ruby and I agree completely, but I would also say that I would rather have an eventually doomed attack which brings some life to a game than follow through what I think is the normal flow to a game to find out that I have been well an truely outplayed positionally, leading to a miserable finish to the game where my opponent eventually crushes me. Unfortunately I don't see the signs early enough and get crushed ><.

...so what I'd (sarcastically) suggest for you would be to enjoy your attack and then resign - to spare yourself the agony of the continuation!
