Never heard a good player complain about the stalemate rule.

I'd think he/she wouldn't be such a good player if they were complaining about the rule.

@dragon. There are two simple rules: to win you must (absent resignation) checkmate your opponent and you cannot move into check. If your opponent is not in check but cannot move, you’ve made it impossible to checkmate your opponent, so it’s impossible for you to win. Simple.

I've long believed that the player who delivers stalemate should lose as a penalty for poor play.

I know tat. My comment was intended to make it easier for ppl who criticize the rule to understand why the rule exists.

haha true

Nah. The game just stops. It’s not checkmate and no moves can be played. The player who delivers the stalemate already suffers humiliation so there’s no need to rub salt in the wound. The stalemated player already feels victorious.

Now after understanding the rule I  still get low tier players complaints i just asked for clarification because i made a misplay that ended it in a stalemate but i thought i had won because my oppenent didnt have any moves left but after knowing the rule im on a win streak i think its a solid rule that demonstrates that you have to accurately be able to close out a game

The most humiliating stalemate is when you promote to a queen, thinking victory is at hand, then realize that your opponent has no moves. Just yesterday against Holly I had to promote to a knight to avoid stalemate and I felt pretty smug about it.

That is idiotic!

That would mean the following position, which I had in a tournament game as White, would be a loss for Black the moment he goes Ke6, which he did, basically surrendering to the draw which he cannot avoid anyway?

He can go to g6 and I just toggle on the 2nd rank until he allows the stalemate ot advances a pawn into a drawn 2-on-1, or he can end the game immediately, like he did, with 1...Ke6 to which I played 2.Re2+!! and he took and stormed out the door pissed that he drew rather than won.  This should not be a loss for Black by any stretch!

Another I have pulled multiple times!

Or

In the latter, if he walks across to g8, then Rf8+ and I get behind the King.

I think that stalemate is the worst rule which ever exists... You are about to win and Ola! Stalemate?!

How is this a draw hes in checkmate

If one player has insufficient material and cannot move their king without being put into check, it is stalemate.

Interesting to see people saying that only bad players could be against such a rule.

Perhaps the GMs and world champions who have, in the past, argued that the rule should be changed are actually just bad at chess?

Sorry if I caused you distress. The above is just my snarky rejoinder to people who complain about not winning when they deliver stalemate. It might not reflect my actual opinion on the matter.

Which piece is directly attacking white's king?

:\

But it is just a rule! That is why you never resign in chess! There is always one chance for the opponent to mess up! Fight until the last breath!!!
