In my opinion, stalemate makes endgames interesting, giving the defending side something to play for...

Guys just think it logically. I don't understand why stalemate ruke shouldn't exist. Just think. The side with the advantage does not care to checkmate the other player. And the player with the disadvantage now... Has his move.. But has no legal moves to play but is not checkmated. What is he supposed to do? Why should he lose the game when he wasn't checkmated?

Stalemate is an argument not to resign. It technically keeps the losing party in the game. While a major rule change did occur after a specific game (Now only same colored pieces can be promoted), the stalemate rule has been left unchanged.

When Europe started the two square pawn opening in the 1500s, India didn't adopt that rule so there is historical evidence of home rules even back then. Just don't expect people to play home rules games except when prize money is involved.

Are u defending stalemate or speaking against it?

I resign before stalemate. Stalemate is for people that want to play on.

I just don’t understand how stalemate could not exist. One player is not in check and the other cannot move. The game comes to a screeching halt. It simply cannot continue. There is no checkmate and further moves are impossible. Checkmate is required to win but it can’t be done, so a draw is the logical outcome,

And yes, it’s always lower rated players who complain about the rule. It’s not fair! I was winning! All of the posts complaining about the rule are filled with exclamation points and all caps. They all sound like playground tantrums to me. You can’t be awarded a win because you were doing better, you must actually know how to checkmate your opponent. You must deliver the killing blow.
