Moves for no reason

I kinda like to sometime make a completely nonsensical move, like shuffling the kind around a bit or something like that. To confuse the opponent and make him think I have a devilish plan which he cannot comprehend. Just to make him waste brain power on nothing tee hee

Does this even work? Is it a normal tactics or whatever you want to call it? I transferred it from karate, made sense it woud work in chess as well but dunno.

Na I do it when I could do something cool, but then I do the nonsense thing instead. The idea is, yeah I loose a good move but in return I get him confused which I hope benefits me later on.

That's a risky idea. If your opponent can maintain his composure (which most people would probably be able to do), then you will have just lost a chance to do something productive with your position.

Well, a karate move or any other physical movement is a continous movement. Chess is to do with a series of discrete positions. True, one picks up a piece and moves but this is not relevant, because a punch or kick realises a target within an undefined temporal frame.A chess piece effectively uses a Star Trek transporter beam to move from one square to another.

Reflexes in chess - other than in a time scramble - are not important. Since reflexes aren't significant, logical judgement is paramount.

Good point. So I guess it works best in time scrambles?

I won SOME games like this: Both players have a few mintes left and lota pieces. Then you start doing nonsensical things that look like attacks while keeping a good defensive structure. It makes the other guy waste a lot of time because he can't figure out what you are trying to do.

(Doesnt work on players that are mostly offensively orientated though since they are just busy thinking about how to attack you so they dont care about your shenanigans.)
