I listen to music almost all the time when I'm online, analyzing games i think it actually helps me to focus.
Music Helps???

I just want everyone to be comforted, if you see someone at a tournament with ear buds on, I'm pretty sure they have to show all of their music to tournament director. So it isn't that likely that someone can cheat. Oh, and by the way I don't think ipods are aloud.
Studies show that classical music maybe able to help in things like this, but it's not a guarantee.

classical music is too slow for to be useful if you want instrumental I think techno is adding more impulses to the brain.

I am not proud of it but I think hampenberg - Duck Toy gets me playing really good. the louder the better. I really need to focus hard on making the best under all thís crazy music.
cascada
unfortunately it is alloud under tournaments to listen to it.

music during the game - jazz (any miles davis)
music if I win - We are the champions + we will rock you (queen)
music if I lose - I hate you (zro)

A bit off topic. Here's a nice article who demonstrates the goodness in music: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12810149

Is it legal in OTB tournaments? Here at USCF tournaments I've faced opponents with ipods on during the game and no one said anything.
One guy was pretty deaf though and had some Led Zeppelin song blaring at the start of one round, I could hear it a few tables away. The TD had to come over and tell him to turn it off lol

Really? because in the USCF rulebook it says that you can listen to music in a tournament if the TD is ok with it.

I read somewhere that there was "evidence" that listening to classical music from the Baroque era will help you retain things better, whether it's college material or chess.

I very much enjoy listening to Techno/electric dance music when playing. It seems to help me focus somehow. Dunno. Sadly a lot of serious OTB tournaments do not allow headphone use while playing I guess for fear of someone using the device to cheat and noise seeping out..

Check out Part Two Here. :)
Josh Waitzkin had some interesting comments in the Art of Learning regarding music. I tried his suggestions and they work. Find a music that jives with your natural rhythm. The music can actually heighten your playing ability.
