Rachmaninov.
music while playing chess

If I'm feeling calm and positive about my game and I think I've got it in the bag, then a Bach slow movement, eg. Air from orchestral suite no. 3 in D major, or 2nd movt of Bach double violin concerto.
If the position needs a lot of calculation, then a Bach fugue usually does it.
If the position is chaotic and messy, like the middle game of a King's indian, or a Scheveningen Keres, then Shostakovich's string quartets are pretty electrifying, eg. 2nd movement of quartet no. 8.
If I'm in a totally lost position, then a Shostakovich slow movement seems to sustain the depression pretty well, eg. 1st and 3rd movt of his violin concerto in A minor, or the 1st movt of his C# minor violin concerto.

(In no particular order) Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Raff, Bruckner, Mahler, Wetz, Magnard, Shostakovich, Miaskovsky, Shebalin, Atterberg, Piston, Creston, Alfven, Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Wallace, Ives, Barber, Braga-Santos, Popov, Lyatoshinsky, Lyapunov, Enescu, Lajtha, Malipiero, Melartin, ... and about a hundred others I can't remember off the top of my head ....

Today I've been listening to Beirut, The Black Angels, Coltraine, Radiohead, and My Bloody Valentine
Now, jazz legend John Coltane sounds perfect. I'll need to add Clifford Brown to that list as well as Cannonball Adderly. I can just feel my rating on live go up 100 points!
I'm a professional musician myself, and I love listening to a variety of music...but when I'm playing chess I invariably end up getting distracted and getting lost in the music. So for me, no music when I'm playing :(

Frank Zappa, no point in listening to anything else, the man tells it like it is and is also an atonishing musician and everybody he played with was equally gifted, an absolute legend
Zappa was a true innovator, but I think based on what I know about Zappa, that he would think your comment is rather idiotic.
