My 6 Tips For How To Improve In Bullet Chess

Hello, I'm RALRAL3333, and I am going to post some tips that are very helpful for playing bullet chess. I have been improving a lot recently, and I have noticed how I have gotten better. Here are some tips for you all:

1. Always premove captures: If it is your opponents move, and they can capture a piece of yours and you can recapture, always premove the recapture, and look for another move as well since your opponent does not have to capture your piece. This can save you multiple seconds in a single game, which is a lot in a bullet chess game.

2. Play bullet after you have played at least a few games in blitz of 5 min and up or rapid first. Then, play only 15-25 bullet chess games in one session. This is helpful because if you play many bullet games at once, and then you play many more after that, you will make more blunders, because in bullet chess, it is likely that both you and your opponent will make multiple errors in a single game. Playing a bit of blitz or rapid first is good, because in those games, you won't be making as many errors, and neither will your opponent. Then, when you play bullet, you will make less errors, believe me! Also, when I have played too many bullet games in one sitting (over 30-40) I have noticed I don't do as good, but when I do short sessions, I see more of an improvement in my ratings

3. Don't get too far behind opponents in time for obvious reasons. You will likely lose on time or make mistakes while trying to catch up on time

4. Play on a phone or tablet: You can make moves more quicker this way

5. Don't resign unless losing badly: I don't resign unless I am losing very badly, because sometimes I win on time in those games. Unless you are losing really badly, it is best not to resign. You will find ways to win some of those lost games. In Blitz and rapid, you should definitely resign when losing by a lot, but in bullet, i don't think it is being a bad sport to resign when you could actually win a game. Of course some of my opponents think a bit differently though.

6. Abort games when you get matched up with players over 150 points lower than you: In bullet chess, it is not as difficult to beat a player who is a couple of hundred points ahead of you as it is for blitz, rapid, daily, etc. For this reason, it is best to abort games when you get matched up against these players, which doesn't happen too often though.

So those are my 6 tips for bullet chess. I hope all of you can learn from these tips and improve your chess. Comment below if you have any questions about my tips or if you have your own tips to share.

This is like another post, but in that post, the person gave very different tips, so many tips work for bullet

And additionally, you have to be very relaxed while playing bullet and should not multitask

I'd also say that it is very important in bullet to play safe in a winning position. When you win a large amount of material (a pure bishop, for example), it is very easy to relax and to think you've won - in bullet, the enemy has a ridiculous amount of resources to try to set up a lot of traps around, using the fact that you don't have enough time to react to everything. So it is very important to consolidate your position and to advance slowly, but surely. In the heat of a lucky moment there is a strong temptation to try to organize a careless attack on the opponent's king to try to win quickly, while overlooking some basic tactic that will destroy your position.

Alas, this is the advice I'm not very good at following myself... So many games with an extra queen lost to some missed knight fork or a backrank checkmate. happy.png

Ahh taking advice from a 1800 rated player
agisdon

im 1900 or so in blitz/bullet and i found his advice worthy. I would only disagree on one of your tips RalRal3333. It is actually easier to play on an a computer or an imac with a mouse cuz its way easier to play fast.

Hi Ral! I'm pretty good at bullet chess, but do not do it much.

I think the way the system works is that IF you abort alot of games- you will be matched against people that abort a lot of games.

I don't think you get banned.

also , you should be able to set up the criteria for your seek.  IOW, if you don't want to play anyone weaker than 100 less than you rating- you don't have to.  change your seek settings.

Thanks for your tips to become better in bullet chess! My personal favourite is the 1st point. I don't think I will follow your 2nd point. Instead I play some unrated bullet games for warm-up before I get to the rated ones. Third point is pretty obvious. I am not sure about your fourth point through I feel that I play faster with a mouse and hence preferably a laptop. Point 5 is true, I mean I resign when I know that I can't win/draw. Point 6 varies for everybody. Personally, I prefer to play higher rated players.

About all of you guys disagreeing with me, these are just my tips. They might not work for everyone, for example, i am a 1600 rated player in blitz but over 1800 in bullet, so i play bullet a bit more different than players who's blitz rating are higher than bullet. Also, many other factors can affect the way you play, so you might not agree with all of my tips. AwsumChess, what i was talking about does not happen often, so you would not get banned. Also, i know my first tip would probably be the most helpful, because fee players do this. Even at the 1800 level, i am shocked that when i can take my opponents queen in a queen for queen trade, even then most of the players don't premove the capture.

I found out that from time to time you know you do not have enough time to win and can lose on time actually. If possible try at least capture mating pieces of your opponent so that there would be a draw. At least you will not lose points

This is a neat little trick. This helps you to move faster.

Apart from that, knowing opening traps, common tactics and combinational patterns helps you to quickly find moves. Knowing how to play certain endgames (e.g. K vs K+P) can also help you to get better results.

I agree with everything except play on a mobile device. If you have more than a year or 2 of good mouse experience, you should play mouse and keyboard. I can play significantly faster on a computer when I have a mouse and a keyboard.
