Well you can't do any worse than my first tourney

I also went to an open section at around 2200 online strength and went 0/7 💀

But the tourneys are stronger over here so that wouldn't happen with you, the lowest rated player I faced was 1860 lmao

I'm fine with open tourneys now though

Avatar of AdkinsAttackInventor

Wow the highest rated player in the tourney rn is 2164, then it's 1849, so yeah I'll probably do better lol

Oh that's fine then. You'll have a bit of OTB rust but you'll win some games. Don't underestimate anyone based on their rating though

Avatar of AdkinsAttackInventor

Yeah as someone with a peak of 2339 elo, then falling 100 elo down because I chillaxed, I know to not underestimate anybody above like 1200 elo

Though I did draw my 800 elo brother in an OTB game at home yesterday, but don't worry, that almost never happens

Guys, new story: An FM just joined the tournament I'm playing in💀. He's 69 years old but still I'm cooked.

Thanks for all the advice! Now, for the experienced OTB players, what do you think of my responses as black to e4, d4, c4, and Nf3, and the systems I'm going to play?

I think I've got a really solid Nf6 and c6 system against the English, Reti, or heck I could play it against d4. As for the Scandi, I think it would be a good surprise weapon with attacking chances.

I like it all happy.png

My sister plays the scandi and scores fine with it

I play the KID and get kind of destroyed with it but that might just be a me thing

I'm surprised you don't just play the KID against c4 as well. Why is that?

Avatar of AdkinsAttackInventor

Well, I really like the move c6 against c4, and in fact I might play that system against d4 as well. It's not very common with the c6 then d5 idea, then I fianchetto the dark squared bishop or develop it to d6, but my light squared bishop sucks, but I usually find a way

Avatar of chesssblackbelt

Yeah I mean you could just play the slav. The KID is so tough to play OTB, it's a lot of theory and you have to really understand the positions

Avatar of AdkinsAttackInventor

Yeah I suck with the KID my winrate is terrible online so I'm playing a Slav

My number 1 advice for inexperienced OTB players is to focus on playing the best chess you know how. That involves two major aspects. First, don't pay attention to your opponent's rating. It's easy to be intimidated by a high rating or overconfident by a low one. Second, maintain a fighting spirit while playing. Don't automatically give up hope if you blunder or see that you have a very bad position. Look for resources that might salvage at least a draw.

Good luck with the tournament!

I might switch as well, my sis has a sadler book on the slav I might steal. Tbh this question would be perfect for her, she basically plays the same openings lol

Avatar of chesssblackbelt

#34 that's good advice yeah don't resign until you're dead lost

In 90+30 there's usually a defence that holds even if you're under a lot of pressure

Avatar of AdkinsAttackInventor

Thanks to you all for the advice! I think my openings will catch people off guard but be solid overall. I'm going to be studying intensively on the Nf6 c6 lines and the Scandinavian for Black, and the Nimzo-Larsen Attack plus the Italian Game for White, but probably the Nimzo. I'm NOT playing the Vienna Gambit or the Vienna with f4 OTB, or playing any sort of slightly dubious gambits attacks, I'm just going to be punished, so lesser known but solid openings with potential agressive ideas is my strategy.
