I'm going to make the first pic my profile pic and  see if it is still a gif.

blueemu

It is.

Sure it is. In your web-browser, right-click on your own avatar and choose "Inspect Element" off the pop-up menu. It is clearly labelled as a .gif.

This assumes that you can read HTML5 to some limited extent... but EVERY educated person can do that, no?

If the word EVERY excludes multitudes of educated individuals, then you are using the word correctly. Secondly, just because a picture/gif has a gif extension doesn't mean it will still function as a gif when posted on certain websites, EVEN if it has the gif extension. According to my knowledege.

blueemu

True, but... is it possible that you are confusing "gif" with "animated gif"?

A gif can be static, just like a png or jpg.

Perhaps when a gif is uploaded to the chess.com server as an avatar, it only accepts the "top slice".

Well, the wise guy didn't blink when I used it as a profile picture. Oddly though. Because it worked when the other guy posted it.
