Need 60 min games with 900+
The most basic would be to set a pace like this. Lets say you average 40 moves a game. That means you want at least half your remaining time on move 20. And
Move 0 = 60 minutes left
Move 10 = 45 minutes left
Move 20 = 30 minutes left
Move 30 = 15 minutes left
Move 40 = 0 minutes left
If you start to get far behind, speed up. If you start to get far ahead, slow down.
-----------
That said, you want to play your opening quickly if you know it, so the first 10 moves probably wont take 15 minutes.
Also if your opponent is falling behind on the clock there's no need to rush yourself.
There's also the important idea of critical positions. In positions where extra time is likely to = big improvement in evaluation then it's time well spent. Plan to reach at least a few critical positions in a game.
Importantly, DONT spend extra time when there will be little difference between the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd best moves (for example). Here it is not a good investment to spend 5 minutes to squeeze out a tenth of a pawn (so to speak). A funny example I like is Rad1 or Rfd1? One may objectively be best, but it's usually impossible to discover it through calculation. In a game you have to make a practical decision based on your knowledge.
Anyway so you start with the basic pace, then with the idea of openings and critical positions you can make adjustments as you play. This is what I do anyway. The more you play the better feel you'll have for when you need to speed up or slow down.
I want to improve and I enjoy long games. We can analyze together. If your skill level is strong and you actually know what you're talking about I'd love criticism and instructions. thanks. hack the planet.
