Iam basically a beginner when it comes to chess, i played the odd game many years ago now find i have more time on my hands and would like to get into chess, i understand how each piece moves/captures etc. which area would you recomend i study to help improve my play?

Start with the very beginning i'd say.  Work on opening theory.  You should also use chess mentor and  tactics trainer.

Actually, i think people would say to start with end games.
