Need tips for how to make less horrible youtube chess videos

Hello, I just spent a bunch of hours making some chess videos of spectacularly questionable quality and could use some pointers as to how to improve them.  Some ideas I already have:

1) Aquire Russian accent

2) Invite celebrities to co-host

3) Involve a cat somehow

4) Give up completely

5) Drink more

Anyhow, here's the videos:

Thank you, I plan on having her back for several more.

Talk about your thought processes and what you are seeing on the board...Try to make your thoughts concrete as opposed to "whats next?" or "why did he do that?"

Your rambling while slight amusing is not really beneficial.

With the exception of perhaps the first video (which was really more of a test) none of these are intended as educational, but yes, I totally agree that if I wanted to make instructional videos they would probably require either a script or some sort of concerted effort at coherence.

On it as we speak...

GargleBlaster, here is one tip. You record the game and don't talk or record sound. Then you replay the video and record your comments in time with the video and when you upload the video to youtube, you use your recorded comments as the soundtrack.

That's a good idea and I may try it.  That said, I really wasn't trying to make an instructional video in the manner of the roughly several billion already out there.  To be honest, I've never found those at all interesting and much prefer learning in person or from a book.  In contrast to either, I find internet videos frustratingly non-interactive and slow.

Thanks for the idea, though, it's almost certainly a good one, and especially for now.

Remember Euwe did a book on Master vs Amateur? Maybe if you comment on blitz games that you have against us patzers, to help explain the mistakes your lesser-rated opponents make during a live game, it will be very instructive!

I have several videos by prominent chess masters, and the one criticism I have, common to all, is that they go too fast. I'd advise you to give your viewers enough time to asimilate the information that you're presenting. Good luck and best wishes, John C.

Thanks, these are all great suggestions and I look forward to trying them out in future videos.

I enjoyed them, John, and am sorry you got some negative feedback on youtube. Indeed, I think it's fine for them not to be educational, as it's fun to watch you (or your opponent) writhe. Still, maybe voicing your thoughts more, as OMGTeddyBear stated, would help others.

Your phone at the end of the 1st video scared the shit out of me!

GargleBlaster

Sorry about the phone :)

OK, after watching the videos, it's pretty clear that it's hard to talk (and play) coherently at these time controls.  I'm going to try and make a few tomorrow at a much slower pace and hopefully that will help.
