New Chess Set

I've been trying to convince my wife to let me spend $800-$1000 on a new chess set. Of course she has said no. But, she did say if I could come up with a good enough reason to get it she would let me. Who has some words of wisdom to help me convince her to let me get it?

You could always try the chess set as investment approach.  Point out the short supply of tropical hardwoods and the distinct possibility that chess set prices may increase to unheard of levels as preferred woods become even scarcer.  Maybe you could find something pristine but used on Ebay and point out how much you are saving compared to retail as well.  Good luck.

As a side note, I've seen this pic before, and admired it, of course. I always wonder though, about the direction the grain runs on those dark squares. Is there a typical way the grain should run, or as long as they run the same direction it isn't a big deal? I notice the dark squares run left-right and the grain on the light squares runs up-down. Also, OP, good luck, I can't think of a thing other than tell everyone you want cash instead of presents for b-days, holidays, and any occasion where a gift would normally be exchanged.

I paid $14 for a vinyl board and plastic pieces.

Whatever you do, just don't tell her that you'd later have to get a new board and/or table to do the set justice.

The chess set you are planning to buy is available nearly under $250 with quality as good as H.O.S. Just go through this discussion forum http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/chessbazaars-imperial-collectors-set-sinquefield-cup

Hope this helps!

Do as I do with motorcycles and bicycles, just arrive with them and then ask for permission

I rather ask for forgiveness than permission xD

Tell her that when you get to 1800 rating you are getting the chess set.  No self respectin 1800 rated player is without one.

Then work ever so hard to get there.

which set are you looking at and where? There is a big price span on similar quality pieces. Someone was discussing sandalwood over ebony in another thread. it will soon be unobtainable and doesn't split like ebony. check out the equipment and books forum.
