I think it's a great idea. It just has to be present, but unobtrusive.
New Homepage for Chess.com needed!
Thanks Ronald! I'm kinda new to those types of activities... Can you tell me how to do that or could you do tha for me?
Anyway, I hope we can spread the word around. This one idea is something that can be done relatively easily.
Ok, I told him. Give it a day or 2, he's pretty busy with virus ads, XP, Java. I' get the feeling that a new major change may be in the works in the near future because he asked for suggestions in a separate thread. If you get any other ideas you can always use the forum, "Site Suggestions & Feedback" anytime.
But folks, at the bottom of every page, next to the green pawn; the last words "chess-English". Click on that and all the languages available are listed. Maybe they should publicize the feature a little more but it's already available.
Hey, not to be a nitpicker but, the various language Wikipedias are separate sites, with separate members.
See, one idea leads to another. Check out post #9. baddogno always knows more than me. He specializes in helping people. I specialize in IRRATATING people.
I see. Good point, baddogno. I agree with you that the feature should be brought up a little bit and maybe changed a little bit. I never noticed it since I never go to that bottom part. I'm sure a person who is new to the site is not gonna notice that either. So I still think that a Wiki type of page is gonna be cool. More ideas welcome!
Look around other threads too. A member by the name of, "Itude" likes to give Erik suggestions for improvement all the time. If you hover your mouse over a person's name, a box shows up, and you should be able to send a message to anyone.
Thank you Ronald, I really appreciate your valuable information. And thanks for sending a request to chess.com for this idea.
I'd also like to thank everyone else for productive participation.
how about they just learn english? problem solved.
It's not really a big deal. Aside from the forums, anyone should be able to navigate this site even if illerate. You really don't need to understand a particular language to play chess. One could also learn a specialized foreign vocabulary just for chess, a la Bobby Fischer.
What if they come from Mars, and all they speak is STUPID? I guess I'll be seeing you in the, "I Just Nuked'em Thread". Thank you, your a lovely audience. Don't forget to tip your waitress on the way out!
@ John,
Try to go to Chinese websites and see how well you will do. Unless you see latin letters, something like "English," I highly doubt you're gonna be able to navigate the site. So now you know what latin letters look like for those who have been barely exposed to them. And believe you me, there's no shortage of that type of people. Lots of people in remote rural areas in Easern Eurasia who just recently got a computer and internet connection.
I can relate to this from a personal experience also. Back in 2000, when they introduced the Internet in our school, I knew enough English to go to websites but not enough to understand anything. I would go to NASA's website and click on random pictures. I remember I was clicking on "download" without realizing what I was doing. Next thing I knew there was a shuttle launch video in the computer but I could still not understand what the word "download" meant since I was clicking on ten other things too with little idea of what's going on. Needless to say I was using mainly Russian websites for most of the time. So yea, for a lot of people out there the Internet and English language websites are a mystery like they were for me back in 2000.
Chess.com is doing well. It's fun and easy to use. However, I strongly believe a new homepage is needed. The thing is that for a lot of people who don't speak English signing up and navigating the site can be a challenge. I know you can change your language while signing up or editing profile but I believe the option should be offered right on the homepage. Wikipedia's model can be a good example. This will ease access to those who have difficulties with English. This will attract many new users to the site. I hope to see this positive change this year. Let's see if we can agree on this one and maybe get chess.com do this.
