Hi,

We wrote an app ( https://chesscoach.network/ ) to help chess players analyze their common mistakes in the early game and help them improve. We wanted to know what you think about it.

Thanks!

JamesAgadir

So I tried it out. It's a nice idea and it's quite well executed. I like how it specifies how many times and where you made the mistake, think the contrasting of moves is well done and generally really like it.

The analysis can be flawed because it looks at computer evaluations, they are well known for not always being accurate in openings.

It needs a few more choices. I play a lot of premove blunders in bullet and so having them evaluated is a waste of a good tool. I'd love if I could choose which time groups (bullet, rapid, blitz, daily) analysed.

I guess the first change is near impossible to do (and doesn't damage the analysis too much) but the second feels like it's doable and it would add a lot to the app.

I hope I've not just failed to find the option. Have a good day happy.png.

Thanks for the feedback! happy.png

I think it's a good feature to have, we might implement it when we have some time.

Hey, I really liked this! I did indeed see some openings where I have some idea, but I see now that it is not correct and I will definitely approach it in a different way from now on!

As you are still in the development phase I will also give my thoughts. Maybe you could increase the minimum number of games that have the same mistake by 1-2. I had many improvements where I played it only 2-3 games. I feel as if those add less to my learning as the ones which I play often (5+ times). The ones I didn't play too often didn't really surprise me, I just felt like 'yeah I was messing about there', but the ones where I played it 5+ times really shocked me like 'wow I've always played that and it's bad!?'. Then again, I had 1000 games to analyze, so for people with less games this might also not work. But I would like it if it had an option for how many times you made the mistake. I would put it at 5, and those will really stand out to me. Now I had 50 improvements, also a bit much to really go through.

Anyway, very nice going, nice initiative, I really enjoy chess programming myself and very nice to see others reaching out with their creations aswell happy.png

Thanks @JanBargeman !

Good suggestions!

We will probably implement those requested features this weekend and announce an update here.

Hi @JanBargeman , @JamesAgadir

We just made an update that includes your feedback and other feedback that we gathered!

The new features are:

  • You can now analyze games with a specific time control class (for example: blitz games)
  • We now have more openings so opening moves don’t get reported as mistakes
  • You can filter mistakes by the minimum number of games that you made them in
  • Added ability to report mistakes as not being mistakes

Cheers

Thanks. It's an amazing tool and really original.

I've posted a blog about it (I've got a lot of friends on chess.com and my blogs got 100 odd views when we were in V2 although numbers like that are harder with V3). But I couldn't get a good enough resolution for your logo. Do you have a non compressed version of the logo I could use as the main picture?

@JamesAgadir

Wow, thanks! Maybe you can post the link here?

We didn't got the chance to make a visual identity.

Maybe you could use a screenshot?

Thanks!

I tried using a screen shot if the chess coach logo but it's too pixelated. If not it's fine the picture I have is good enough.

Hi, I tried out your website, I loved it! I noticed that it showed mistakes that occurred in multiple games but weren't made by me as well though. That's the only problem there is, really happy.png

Great job!

A way to specify how many recent games should be analysed would be helpful too. Say, for example I took a break and improved my skills and then played a lot. I'd want to see the mistakes after my improvement.

I tried it for both Chess.com and Lichess and in both cases it reported no mistakes found which I found rather incredible. I really must have made mistakes

I tried it out. It's pretty good, but there are always things I can improve on (especially minor things). Inaccuracies that are not like changes from say, .2 to .1. More of on the .7 to .4 scale.

this thing found all my bullet opening mistakes. Glad to know I don't do many mistakes in blitz, lol. It's pretty nice interface.

James I completely agree, some great insights here! Thank you very much.

Unfortunately we had to give up on the hosting/domain cuz no one was using it, but we still have the code somewhere, if you are interested in some specifics feel free to PM me
