when I try to invite a friend to play chess now I get this message every time error check new version. anyone have any ideas I've been poking around for half an hour

Have you tried the link (at the bottom of each page) that says: "Try the new Chess.com!" ?

This will switch you to chess.com V3 (I am guessing you may be using V2, which was the default when you joined).
