Hey everybody, I'm new to the site and am enjoying it very much.  My question is this--if I call a checkmate and it turns out not to be a checkmate, do I automatically lose?  And, conversely, if I call a check and it turns out to be a checkmate, do I automatically lose?

Thanks a bunch.

what do you mean by calling it. on this site, the computer tells your opponent if it's check or mate

yea dont worry about that, you dont have to say anything really.

If you call (you don't have to pronounce it) a checkmate and it isn't, you only lose face but you don't lose (unless you're losing anyway).  If you pronounce check when it's a mate, you win obviously.

Chess isn't like 'Uno' where you have to say something in order to win.  The pieces do all the talking.

well it is a check when its is check and a mate when its a mate! It really does not mean you lose by saying anything even in really chess! Well unless there is a weird rule formed by people playing tha game!

Have fun in Chess.com and you do not have to worry about that here.

Just play, the rules take care of everything else.

OK, I think Charlie got what I was asking about.  I didn't mean stand up and dance around waving my finger in my opponents face   8-)

I wanted to know if I lost because I was an idiot.  I'm getting a sense that by buddy is full of it, but we were both drinking pretty heavily.

Thanks everybody!  Looking forward to seeing you all on the board.  Thanks again.
