"There's a tendency to assume that chess champions are deranged until proved otherwise. History is full of them: the psychopathic anti-Semite Bobby Fischer; Wilhelm Steinitz, who said he'd played God at chess using an invisible wire ("and won") and Paul Morphy, found dead in his bath, reputedly surrounded by his worryingly ample collection of women's shoes. The worst you can say of Kasparov is that he seems alarmingly intense. But some have interpreted his fervid opposition to Putin as a symptom of paranoia. What does he believe the West should be doing?"
