No benefit from learning

I think there is nothing benefit for me to learn tactics or strategy because I however do such a big mistakes and blunders in my games. And even to learn how to make mate with Rook is useless, because I failure in a stress situation of game like in this one. How to avoid blunders and mistakes?

Bad times fella. How much time did you have left? Do you know how to force mate here? In future take a move to get your rook far away from the king so there's zero chance of doing that again. Then you can search your memory for a second for the way to win. Some decent tactics from you amongst some dubious play gg.

Or something similar. Oppose the King and force it back rank by rank. As you see even though it is forced win it takes a good 30-40 moves maybe more if the losing player is trying to flag you and drag it out as long as possible. You might need to play this at speed so get it absorbed or suffer again in the future!

Huh! Sounds too demanding for me. Every day? And what is the benefit of that all? I wonder do I ever go higher than 1200 even if I practise practise every day. Should I give up? The ultimate question: what is the benefit from chess? Is it a waste of time? For me it has been game of frustation so far. Where do I get motivation do practise practise every day? I do not progress anymore.

Here is my stat. First after sudden death from 1200 to 941 I raised back to 1163 and then even to 1251 but after that I have fallen down and now I'm back to 905! :( Something has been going terrible wrong in my "learning" to play chess. It jojos like my weight.

Judging from your recent posts of great lament, I'd suspect that your chess problem is mainly of a psychological nature; you stress yourself out.

Simply put: Slow down, take it easy. Remind yourself that it's a learning process and try to enjoy your games while learning from your mistakes.

If you're studying chess literature, don't overload. Read a bit and then practice what you've read before proceeding to the next chapter so that you may better absorb the ideas presented in the book.

Could be. I have mental illness. When I'm in depressed mood I play terrible. I need to be little hypomaniac then I play better.

I wasn't referring to any mental illness, rather a problem of a psychological nature. To put it more plainly, I'm saying that your enthusiasm for chess might be making you too impatient for your own good.

It takes time and effort to learn chess. Try to enjoy the process instead of being hard on yourself when you make mistakes.

Come on Petri, do not give up.

Try to eat this bread, I think it makes people play chess better:

Chess didn't do that to you. You did that to you.

I'm bad learner. Because of smoking my memory and other brain abilities are poor. And because of psycohtic times too my learning process is poor too. And I'm lazy to learn. At the moment I haven't got much else in my life than sit home and play chess. Perhaps that is the main problem. I should have something else to do also. It is not healthy anymore to sit at home and play so much chess and get frustated because none progress.

If you're too lazy to learn, then that's your reality. It might be a good idea to adjust into this reality in stead of fighting it.

In any case, healthy or sick, it is beneficial to exercise alongside your chess career; neurons fire quicker after working out, takes your mind off your problems, and provides perspective on life.

I know that it's not easy to motivate yourself when being depressed, thus leaving this advice a bit redundant. It is, however, extremely beneficial to what I sense, you're going through.

I have a suggestion. Find another skilled hobby you enjoy and care about, and balance your time with both of them. Taking a break is sometimes the best thing you can do.

Also, I dislike the word lazy. If you are interested in something, you will want to learn it. If you are uninterested you won't want to learn it. Either way is fine, just be honest with yourself about what you care about and how you want to spend your time. Find something that inspires you and grabs your attention.

Here's a list of skilled activities you could explore off the top of my head:

Music
Visual art
Skateboarding
Chess
Checkers
Computer programming
Video game design
Fishing
Running
Any sport
Chemistry
Neuroscience
Veterinary care
Sculpture
Hiking

The list goes on. Information about each of those things is so readily available online that you could spend a lifetime learning and fascinating yourself by them.

Sound advice, good post! - And obviously it never hurts to go skateboarding grin.png

bunicula

i suggest tiddlywinks.

Good man! If it is impossible to do a lot, do a little and enjoy minor improvements. Same thing with chess, really.
