nobody chats on live chess..

is it because most people who play chess online are antisocial and awkward and ugly? I mean this in the nicest way possible..

People concentrate on their games while they play

At the very least, I have time for a brief greeting. Unless it's a blitz tourney, I always offer one.

in a 15 minute game im usually watching youtube videos and doing whatever else.. how can there not be enough time to have a conversation on the side while playing? That makes no sense

What are you watching on youtube during those games ?

The rediculous aruments i have been given are:

I'm not here to chat

I dont have time to chat

Youre chatting to distract me

Keep in mind that for the majority, its an excuse to play the e-thug. 

If they had an interface for a mic here in live chess, I would chat during bullet games....otherwise, unless I am really comfortable during the game from a time and evaluation standpoint, don't expect much more than hi, gl and gg at the end

I enjoy a good chat during a friendly OTB game, but not this.

Yes, that absolutely makes sense. I never type words in chat because if I did my opponent would magically know that I am ugly. *nods*

I find that people are more talkative in unrated games (ones that are about 15-30 min).

If a player wants chat (in live) then they have to be willing to delay making their move so that their opponent doesn't lose time on their clock...

Dude, seriously that's not the essence of chess. While you wait for your opponent's move you can think, predict, make plans

The lower the ratings are, the more likely the person is to chat.
