I didn't think it was harsh. It was direct. The point is, especially among kids, they think they can multitask without suffering a performance hit. This is why it drives me nuts to see how many people yap on their phones while driving. In chess, all that suffers is one's rating. In the car, others' safety does.
Due to insults , I keep my chat turned off.
No one has time to chat in bullet and blitz. I see many people chat in online chess.

That could be deemed harassment by chess.com. I don't recommend doing that to your opponents...

Think of live as OTB, rated...do you chat with your opponent's during those ? My guess is that your opponent and the TD would have something to say about it, if it wasn't wanted....
I occasionally hold friendly conversation during 30 minute standards, ranked or otherwise. If I question the thinking behind one of our moves, we may converse regarding the why... I alert them if I am to get up and grab a drink of water, thus leading to a possible minute of afk? Generally speaking I deem it rude to BE rude in chat, however refusing to reply is simply a power everyone has been granted and I don't hold it against them for flexing that muscle. Chat can of course inhibit ones ability to focus at times.
I've been called a fool, an idiot, and an a*shole in chat. But typically people are nice, at least at my level.
in a 15 minute game im usually watching youtube videos and doing whatever else.. how can there not be enough time to have a conversation on the side while playing? That makes no sense
Perhaps that is why your rating is 1100?
