I am not disagreeing with a vacation button by no means. however, I am disagreeing with a person seeing they are going to lose no matter what they do then instead of resigning they press the vacation button. Most Real chess players see they can not win the game, do the honorable thing and resign. This person is just saying "PlayToMateFirst, F.U." I'm not a very good player Yet but if I can not win a game, like a mate in two or three then why do something dumb as this?  we all enjoy this game this is why we play. we have days we hate this game then for the most part we all live to beat the hell out of another persons brain. this is fun am I iright?

yes I am, then you have those that just don't care they play the game like they live their lifes, foolishly. the game of chess is very intense, it's a love hate relationship to most of us, no matter what our level is, it's something we would do all day, all week long if we didn't have to work. so why act like a vacation botton is ok? it should be, but it should be a point in the game where it can not be used. how you may ask?

a computer keeps track of the game if it sees mate in two or three then the vacation button is disabled. then you have your three days or your set time to finish the game. besides most people take thier computers on vacation with them I know I do for those time when I am bore I can get on line and play.. guess what? CHESS!!

First of all, it is quite possible this person is on vacation, or has some other extenuating circumstance. I looked at your game and the player you mentioned is from Colombia. I was bored so I did a little research and I came across this statistic: "More than 3.5 million civilians out of the country’s [Colombia's] 40 million people have been displaced during the last two decades." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colombia#Human_rights_situation

That is almost 10% of the people, 1 in 10. Now, this situation may or may not apply to this player; but it is a possibility. The situations they are facing are much different than the ones you and I enjoy here in the States. When you say

"besides most people take thier computers on vacation with them I know I do for those time when I am bore I can get on line and play.. guess what? CHESS!!"

you're assuming they have a laptop. For all we know they might not even have a computer (they might play at a library or some other place). There is a very significant chance that you are getting worked up over nothing.

Obviously it sucks having to wait for your win, but eventually one of two things will happen. Either he/she runs out of vacation time and loses on time; or he/she is legitimately on vacation, and he/she comes back. With the former situation you win automatically, in the latter situation you have a great chance of finishing with a win (due to your position, nice game btw).

I'm fairly certain that I've got a laptop or two around here, but that doesn't give me internet access in the wilderness areas where I tend to vacation.

I think that is clear both from your post, and the way I quoted it. It should be clear, as well, that I was adding my two cents in agreement with your point.

PlayToMateFirst's assumptions are flawed, producing an unsound argument.

Jonnyp, I somehow agree with you not all people have laptops. that is a given. but the point is this for those that abuse the vacation button there should be something in place to stop this. I don't mind waiting for someone to come back from vacation this is not the point. this person sees that there is no way for him/herself to win this game, so they disided to be unfair and push the vacation button. now if we were playing a game and there was no clear winner or there were still ways out of winning and they needed the time to go over the game this is something different but any one that look at this can will see he/she can not win here. I also think this person was upset that they (me as well) were making bad moves they just wanted to punish me by doing this. both of us made missteaks. as I stated I'm not that good and I don't really care if a person takes vacation but in a case like this, I'm just talk on my behalf I would resign becuase I know I can not win. Why CHEAT by doing that?

but I really do understand not everyone have laptops. please let's really look at the abusers and not the abuseZ'z my point is just there should be inplace a button to let someone know this person is going to do this. how many of us can afford a month or more vacation? but like someone said I may be just complaining.. until it happen to them then they may have the same complaint..

let's honor eachother and be fair is all I'm saying.

Is this a recreational chess site or the FIDE World Championship?

Limit the total number of vacation days per year and there is no problem.

Some players will always use every bit of time available, particularly in difficult positions (some people find it difficult to face their own failures). If vacation time is allowed, and it should be, it is within the rules to use it to postpone loss.

I know of another site where players may cancel the vacation of their opponents. Such a system mitigates against the abuse noted here, but opens the possibility of far more serious abuse. I fear to take my vacation there because I could lose every game while drinking mojitos in the deep woods.

I think the vacation time on this site is about right! it is there for those that need it, some people take two holidays a year. They should try to inform their opponents when they are going/coming back if posible. There are those that abuse it...I have one game where this is the case, all vacation time is now up and I am just waiting for my opponent's time to end.

I can't see a way around this problem as players take holidays 1/2/3 weeks or whatever.

Yeah, the vacation option is soooo stupid. Aviously nobody is going to vacation and even if you are you can still play a move a day or just resign if your losing.
