hi I was wondering if someone could help me understand some of the notation used in this book. 1 g6! fg 2 F5! what does fg mean? it has gf not long after too...

Maybe fxg or f pawn takes g pawn

Indeed: fg is short for fxg6. That is also how Chess Informant notates it to save space.
