Black can avoid the the forced checkmate playing 1. .. Rhf8 or Rbd8 (Rd7 after Qxa7+). There's no need to take d4. Needs to be more analysied.

My oh my... that would certainly have put me in a sticky situation. Nice find! With regards to my possible responses set out my MartinJaeggi, I suppose they could work, but they would have stalled the attacks I had in mind, which would have been disastrous, since I was running into time trouble (7 minutes left on my clock compared to 19 for white).
