Offering a draw

An opponent who is rated 100 pts higher than me took my Queen and is ahead a piece and a pawn.  So when he took my Queen, I offered him a draw. Is that as funny as I thought it was ?  'cause It cracked me up! (I resigned after that)

fissionfowl

No. Not funny at all. And many in fact consider it disrespectful.

re fissionfowl: thanks for your answer. But I thought the opposite as you do, in fact it is still cracking me up .) I take the game seriously and am highly competitive but I still retain a sense of humor about it, though I know many players don't, that is to be expected.  But I really don't see anything disrespectful about it, do you have any firther thoughts on why that might be? Thanks .)

Probably because offering a draw in a losing position is like telling your opponent that you don't think they can successfully checkmate you even though they're in a winning position.  Plus it's a weak tactic by some players to try to get out of a loss and rarely ever effective.

Draws should only be offered in truly drawn positions.

did you hang your queen without protecting it. If in that case you offered draw I would assume that you were asking for a draw because of a wrong mouseclick and some might even give you that.

Over the board, it would be funny. Your smile would make it obvious that you were just making a little joke. But this kind of humor doesn't work nearly as well online, without the smile and body language. Remember, your most serious thoughts and your little jokes are made with exactly the same "tone of voice" online

OTB someone I offered a draw declined the draw and made a bad move that resulted in a clearly lost position when he realized it he said now I take the draw like the draw offer was something he could use whenever he wanted.

Well there is if you want to play the person again or get analysis from them after the game.

One of my recent opponents offered me a draw when he saw he was losing, he wont be getting another game.

The best way to make it funny is if you're down to a lone King, your opponent has K+R+B+pawns, and you say it in the manner of the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail after he got both arms & legs cut off:  "All right, we'll call it a draw."

whats wrong with trying... he would obiously say no but there is still a chance that he sees something against him that you don't...

Once I played a blitz game against an oponent who was rated 800 because I felt to tired for a serious game so of cause he had a lost position at some point and then he started to offer me a draw I declined, he offered again, I declined and the same thing over and over again...I was barely able to move because he did it that fast...this was rude but a single draw offer in a lost position doesn't hurt especially if your oponent is not in time pressure

You don't have to decline, just make your move and it will auto decline.

julian_TSG

I normaly play with my phone...don't think there is a way to avoid the offer to be shown...

raphaelniu

i thought arbiter will stop?

A lot(?) or at least some members here definitely find inappropriate draw offers disrespectful or even insulting. I just ignore them if I think they're inappropriate but even I got a little hot under the collar once when a good pal (we're still pals BTW) offered me draws several moves in a row in a dead lost position (turn-based game) I finally asked him to stop.

Not everyone's sense of humor is identical so in this case I'd consider not offering draws unless you think the offer is legit. It's not that big a deal but personally I don't like ticking people off even including total strangers if I can avoid it

julian_TSG

Didn't stop...at the end I had 50s for the final move and almost didn't get to mate him because of this

LordHarnois

It seems to me a fellow that takes an ask for a draw as offensive if the askee is in a losing position are taking online chess a bit to seriously.

julian_TSG

I agree...I mean if ur in a won position I don't think your oponent is questioning your skills because he just lost a game against u...of cause there is nothing funny about it but it doesn't hurt anybody eithet so why get offended?

Scottrf

Because it's immature, akin to throwing a strop. You know your opponent wont take it, it's just a tactic to be a pain in the arse.
