Can one imagine any other World Class Event in which both competitors tank in the ultimate game and neither tries to win?

Seattle-Patriots Super Bowl they just decide to draw and don't go for the win?

WTF?

This is indefensible and makes a mockery out of the concept of it being either a competetion or a sport or even a game.

It's nothing but a presentation at this stage.

I agree completely. Game 12 should have been the final showdown instead of both players just going through the motions until move 30. They might as well have shook hands at the beginning of the game and said "See you on Wednesday!"

It made strategic sense for MC to coast in neutral until getting to overtime.   He knew better than any of you second guessers where he could most usefully capitalize on his application of force.

I agree, Carlsen was confident in his rapid chess abilities and thought he had a better chance winning in he tiebreakers than he did in classical games. Therefore I have to point the finger at Karjakin for not wanting anything more than an easy draw in the final classical game. Surely he had an idea that he was throwing away a good opportunity? Or maybe he was feeling pretty overconfident after 12 games when the score was still level...

Doing anything other than playing solid in a 12-game match is practically suicide. Carlsen almost payed for it but luckily was able to get a win and tie the match again. In 24 games maybe we'd see something different.

Let's not move this thread to off-topic!

On another note, @matthew_b_rook, you can message me about the price until the end of the year. Then it expires.

Don't worry about Off-Topic, so much. Please refrain from political postings or the topic will be locked.

I've seen dozens of American football games where players take a knee on the last play before going into overtime. And I've seen plenty of real football games where the teams got more and more cautious as overtime approached.

It's far more common than some chess players seem to realize. It's part of what makes it a sport.

I think people just get frustrated because it seems like chess players are always "taking a knee" rather than just doing it to secure a won match or something.

Always taking a knee. That is chess at the highest level.
